UBB MINERS MEMORIAL RECEIVES GIFT FROM APPALACHIAN POWER

Power Company Donates $10,000 to the Project

WHITESVILLE- The Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial Group, INC announced today it received a $10,000 contribution to the UBB Miners Memorial project from Appalachian Power. The memorial group was presented a check from the company during  a ceremony at the proposed memorial site on Friday, October 14th. “Appalachian Power Company is humbled to be a part of the Upper Big Branch Memorial.  We realize that the memorial its self may not fill the hole experienced by those who have lost a loved one.  It is our hope however that the memorial can provide a sense of peace, and an opportunity for current and future generations to be aware of the 29 brave individuals who lost their lives here April 5, 2010,” said Tania A. Hotmer, External Affairs Manager with Appalachian Power Company.

Including this most recent gift, the memorial group has raised over $350,000 for the UBB Miners Memorial since the fund raising phase of the project began earlier this year.  In June, Alpha Natural Resources pledged to match the first $250,000 the group was able to raise. The preliminary estimate to build the project was $500,000 but that has since been adjusted with the addition of new elements to the memorial project’s plans.
